The Academy Award for Best Actor is one of the most closely watched prizes in film. Looking back at the winners is a quick history of screen acting: changing styles, the rise of transformation roles and biopics, and the occasional surprise that nobody predicted.

Below is a complete list of Best Actor winners from 1990 to 2026, followed by a short look at what each era tells us about the craft. Years refer to the ceremony; the films were released the year before.

What the winners tell us

The 1990s: character and range

The decade opened with Daniel Day-Lewis’s total physical commitment in My Left Foot and included Anthony Hopkins’s Hannibal Lecter, one of the shortest leading performances ever to win, at around 16 minutes on screen. Tom Hanks won two years in a row, a feat only Spencer Tracy had managed before him. Roberto Benigni became the first actor to win Best Actor for a performance mostly in a language other than English.

The 2000s: intensity and real people

Biographical roles became increasingly dominant: Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles, Philip Seymour Hoffman as Truman Capote, Forest Whitaker as Idi Amin and Sean Penn as Harvey Milk. Adrien Brody became the youngest Best Actor winner at 29 for The Pianist.

The 2010s: transformation

Physical and vocal transformation was rewarded again and again: Eddie Redmayne as Stephen Hawking, Gary Oldman disappearing under prosthetics as Winston Churchill, Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury and Matthew McConaughey’s dramatic weight loss for Dallas Buyers Club. Daniel Day-Lewis’s win for Lincoln made him the only actor with three Best Actor Oscars. Jean Dujardin won for a silent performance in The Artist.

The 2020s: veterans, comebacks and new voices

Anthony Hopkins became the oldest acting winner at 83 for The Father. Brendan Fraser’s win for The Whale completed one of Hollywood’s most talked-about comebacks. Adrien Brody won his second Oscar, 22 years after his first, for The Brutalist, and Michael B. Jordan won in 2026 for playing twin brothers in Ryan Coogler’s Sinners.

What actors can learn from these performances

Watching award-winning work closely is one of the best free acting lessons available. When you watch, look beyond the big emotional scenes:

  • Stillness: notice how much the best performances do with very little.
  • Specificity: physical habits, rhythms of speech and small behaviours that make a character feel real.
  • Listening: how the actor reacts when they are not speaking.
  • Transformation versus truth: some winners transform completely, others play close to themselves. Both can work when the inner life is clear.

Highlights from each era

The 1990s

Jessica Tandy became the oldest Best Actress winner at 80 for Driving Miss Daisy, a record she still holds. Kathy Bates won for her terrifying turn in Misery, and Holly Hunter for The Piano, a performance in which her character never speaks. Frances McDormand won her first Oscar for Fargo, a role written for her by Joel and Ethan Coen.

The 2000s

Halle Berry became the first Black woman to win Best Actress, for Monster’s Ball. Hilary Swank won twice in six years for physically demanding roles. Charlize Theron’s transformation in Monster and Marion Cotillard’s Édith Piaf in La Vie en Rose, a French-language performance, showed the Academy’s growing appetite for total transformation.

The 2010s

Biographical and psychologically intense roles dominated. Natalie Portman trained for months as a dancer for Black Swan, Meryl Streep won her third Oscar playing Margaret Thatcher, and Julianne Moore portrayed early-onset Alzheimer’s in Still Alice. Olivia Colman’s win for The Favourite was one of the decade’s most charming surprises.

The 2020s

Frances McDormand won her third Best Actress award for Nomadland, second only to Katharine Hepburn’s four. Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian woman to win the category, for Everything Everywhere All at Once. Emma Stone won her second Oscar for Poor Things, Mikey Madison won for Anora, and Jessie Buckley won in 2026 for her performance as Agnes, Shakespeare’s wife, in Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet.

What actors can learn from these performances

Watch these films as an actor, not just a viewer:

  • Notice the choices in scenes where nothing dramatic happens. Great performances are built from small moments.
  • Watch how they listen. The reactions often reveal more than the lines.
  • Study transformation and restraint. Some winners change their voice and body completely; others barely seem to act at all. Both approaches need a clear inner life.
  • Look at the writing. Many of these roles are complex, contradictory women with strong objectives. Good parts make great performances possible.
